- Summary
- One of 15 microfilm reels filmed for the Manchester City Library in 2015, Roll 15 includes typed and handwritten materials (some from published sources), including copies of newsclippings and drawings from published sources. Much of the material is in draft form; there are also scraps of paper with notes. The section entitled "Manchester, social" consists of lists of people, places, and organizations in Manchester, with addresses. The categories are Arts and crafts, Boarding and lodging homes, Cabins, Camps, Cemeteries, Comfort stations, Churches, Clubs and organizations, Dentists, Druggists, Golf courses, Guest houses, Gymnasiums, Halls, Homes & asylums, Hospitals, Jewish holidays [!], Lakes, Libraries, Motion picture theatres, Movable feasts and fasts (Christian), Monuments, Manchester Historic Association, Physicians, Public parks and recreation areas, Public schools, Parochial schools, Business schools, Private schools, Restaurants & lunch rooms, Riding schools, Social agencies, Swimming pools - municipal, Veterinaries. The new Green Mtn. songster is a collection of excerpts from a book of that name, consisting of music and lyrics from several ballads. Many of these were sung by Orlon Merrill of Charlestown, NH in 1931. The theater section contains copies of the covers of numerous playbills and theater programs from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including Denman Thompson's "The old homestead", as well as captions and a few photographs of stage sets. The Manchester Guide Book section provides a descritpion of the purpose of the book, as well as several photographs taken in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Section five is entitled "Langlois", referring to a chapter written by WPA writer Victoria Langlois on the Greeks of Manchester. This is a handwritten draft. The workbook journal is just that, a series of dated entries describing what projects were being undertaken by the NH WPA. The History of recreation includes several very short essays and drafts, primarily by George Smith, but also by Luna C. Osburn. A note of information on sculptor John Rogers: although from Salem, Mass., Rogers worked for some time at the Amoskeag Machine Shop in Manchester, NH. He was known for his miniature group scultpures of people performing tasks of everyday life. Done in plaster and known as Rogers Groups, these were affordable and were very popular in the late 19th century
