Summary
"Daniel H. Burnham reshaped the face of American cities. As described by his well-known colleague, Louis Sullivan, Burnham's buildings "rose sheer and stark, with a subtlety of line and surface, a direct singleness of purpose, that gave one the thrill of romance." He built over two hundred structures, including office buildings, train stations, department stores, banks, museums, and hotels. Burnham was best known for his Chicago works, including the Monadnock, Rookery, and Reliance buildings. Yet his commissions spanned the continent with landmark buildings such as the Flatiron Building in New York, Pennsylvania Station in Pittsburgh, and Mills Building in San Francisco." "Based on his architectural planning of the 1893 World's Fair, Burnham became deeply involved as a leader in the City Beautiful Movement. He drafted city plans that increased the efficiency, mobility, and beauty of Chicago, Cleveland, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. His Plan of Chicago received such critical favor that over twenty cities requested he develop similar plans for them." "Burnham also transformed the architecture office from artistic studios based on the Beaux Arts model to professional organizations with branch offices spread throughout the nation. His office served as the training ground for many notable architects who later established practices of their own." "This critical monograph is the first to explore the career of Chicago architect Daniel H. Burnham through thought-provoking text and over two hundred newly commissioned color photographs."--BOOK JACKET
